The original version of "Summa" was composed for a cappella (SATB) voices. I wrote my masters thesis on this song in the early '90s, before Pärt became an international celebrity. At the time, my work was one of the first serious analyses of his music written in English.
I have always loved this music and decided to record it while in the studio working on New Possibilities. I chose to record it with four different guitars, which symbolize the different styles of music that I compose and perform.
Since the original version of "Summa" is in in the key of Em and the arrangement presented here is in Gm, I decided to improvise an Intro and modulate from Em to Gm. Using an old Memory Man analog delay (thanks Fred), I created violin-like swells based on the soprano melody. By manipulating the feedback and delay controls on the Memory Man, I got the delayed sound to modulate up from Em to Gm where the quartet took over.
